These seats are made of MDF, with a certain amount of care they will last as long as most seats, but as with most other seats of this type of construction, if they are subjected to prolonged wet or damp condions they will blow ! The metal hinges will also start to pit or turn green if subjected to urine. This is the most common cause of damage to metal hinges.
